About ten percent of the population suffer from tinnitus or ringing in the ears and around 0.5 percent of the population treat it as a major problem. The effective pharmacological treatment for this condition is not yet discovered since the cause of tinnitus comes from different sources. Thus, the experiments done to identify the most efficient means of treating tinnitus require time and proofs. These must trials must be properly controlled and large number of sufferers must be considered. There are experiments that have engaged in looking for the possible cure for tinnitus and unfortunately, these resulted to uncertain and conflicting outcomes.

On the other hand, extracts from Gingko biloba are seen as possible means of treating tinnitus. Gingko biloba has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. Extracts from this herb have also included in many health food stores in United Kingdom and is one of the top ten herbs sold in health food stores in the United States. Furthermore, it is considered as a drug and one of the top five most prescribed medications in Germany and other European countries.

Its growing popularity even extends in the treatment of tinnitus without sacrificing side effects like symptoms of cerebral insufficiency. The number of people using products which are mainly extracted from Gingko biloba is also increasing since they find it as a cure for their tinnitus.

 In a study Effectiveness of Gingko biloba in treating tinnitus: double blind, placebo controlled trial, it aims to determine how effective Gingko biloba is in curing tinnitus. There were 1121 tinnitus sufferers who participated in the study and a twelve week treatment was administered given 50 mg of Gingko biloba extract three times daily. The results showed that 50 mg Gingko biloba extract is no more effective than placebo in curing tinnitus.
